How Sea Shepherd Saves Whales

Whales are amongst the most brilliant marine mammals on earth. The blue whale is the biggest animal to ever exist. In spite of this history, industrial whaling has actually left the whale animals very endangered. Thankfully, whaling has actually been ended in many nations, however still exists in some. The influence of this continued whaling endangers the existence of the animals, and if not stopped, may wipe out whales.
The adverse impact humans have actually had on whales stems from the commercial hunting for meat and perfume active ingredients. More than 2 million whales were killed in the early 20th century. By the middle of the 20th century, whales were seriously endangered and amounts were lessened. In 1986 the International Whaling Commission (IWC) banned commercial whaling, however Japan goes on to ignore this ban. Once the ban was in spot, Japan went on to hunt whales utilizing a loophole that offers for scientific investigation. The meat from these hunts is offered in shops and restaurants. Though Japan is skirting the guidelines, and it is frowned upon by the IWC, the IWC still enables it.
Whales contribute to the ecological selection of the oceans. Whales eat krill, fish, and small mammals. Whales come in lots of designs and sizes and are located all over the globe. Despite their diversity, most species of whales are at risk due to hunting, environment changes, and population decrease. If whales were to go extinct, there would be a significant negative impact on the natural world.
Seas Shepherd makes use of state-of-the-art direct-action methods to investigate record and take necessary actions when required to make the globe conscious of what’s really happening and to confront these unlawful companies right as they are hunting the whales. By guarding the biodiversity of the world’s exquisitely-balanced ocean environment, Marine Shepherd ensures the continuity of this marine life for future generations to come.
Whales ought to have to live and be enabled to repopulate. The intercontinental community has recognized this, and Sea Shepherd is fighting to uphold the will of the United Nations. If you choose to know more about the fight to conserve whales and just how you can easily help, visit Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for more details. Opportunities exist to turn into a company member and fight directly, donate, or offer support on-shore. Whatever you choose, you will be helping to protect the selection of life on Earth and to shield a noble, deserving creature.

Why do the Japs want to murder humpback whales? We should do something?
The current hunts by Japan will have no effect on the survival of the humpbacks. The populations have rebounded to the point that such a few taken will not impact them. Why is this so much worse than those of us who eat tuna or cod when they are declining rapidly?
The Japanese are one of three nations that doesn’t participate in the ban on international whaling. It whales for “research” though many of the whales it catches are used for food in restaurants. There is nothing that people outside Japan can do about Japanese law being enacted within Japanese territorial waters. The only say you may have is to try to convince Japanese leaders of reasons why whaling may not be the best thing for Japan and its people.
hi we are doing the best we can to stop them.. the whales are slaughtered and remain alive for many hours cause of their size….we have ships going after them and more will leave melbourne in the next week.. the japanese are coming into our waters and killing our whales where they should feel safe and protected, but instead they will be hunted and cruelly killed leaving their young behind which they call out for their mothers for weeks…its really heart breaking to see it for your self… the waters turn blood red as the killing spree takes over… i will post a live webcam on the ship Esperanza as it makes its way to protect these whales… then you can go into the crew log and do what you can to help…..note when you get a black screen on the web cam it just means its night time in that time zone and the cam can not pick up images in the dark…..new images upload every 30 seconds and its live….please do what ever you can to help these beautiful and peaceful loving animals

Pro, I’m kind of cold on whale watching. But I hope Cap’n Will finds plenty of landlubbers to go!
Great idea ! Yes I would like to go and watch the whales!
How do humpback whales (or just whales) hear? Do they have similar hearing to us or do they even have ears?
They have an extremely good hearing in fact they can communicate over miles! Not to mention; they are able to use it as a sonar. As to how it is organised… Essentially the way as us; with the exception that in water; the sound vibration is powerful enough to make not only the small bones in the ears but the whole cranial skeleton vibrates.
Whales do not have pinnae, which are the external ear bits that we and most other land mammals have. (Those are used for directing sound into the ear canal.) Instead whales have evolved to utilize their jaw as part of their hearing system. Sound travels well in water, and is transmitted easily from the water into the whale’s body and those vibrations are fed from the jaw up to the ears. Their hearing is excellent, and they’re able to hear better than use in the higher and lower registers. They can make their own sounds, but unlike the toothed whales & dolphins, they do not use echolocation (sending out sound and listening to the bounces to draw a picture of what’s around). They may use passive ecolocation, basically, they can hear boats and other creatures how those sounds bounce around. Whales do have a small ear hole though, just like us.
I think that’s a great idea. I’ve stopped purchasing products from Japan for three years for this very reason. There is even a neat website (see link below) called “Boycott Japan” that has some detailed and interesting information on how to boycott products from Japan and get the anti-whaling message to these people. I’m not an advocate of anyone going to extreme measures to enforce (no matter how right, just and humane) an act on another society. In this case though I’m sick of the arrogance and disregard Japan displays to the world (be it historical revisionism in the atrocities they committed in WWII or whaling) that I think heavy handed measures should be taken. I’d be thrilled to see the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy intercept these whaling ships, order the crews off, haul them into U.S. or British ports and scrap them.
I don’t like western people just bash entire Japan and Japanese (and even boycott Japanese products?!) as if we all eat and support catching whales. My friends and people get discriminated so bad in some countries ONLY BECAUSE we are Japanese, and these ignorant questions and answers (calling us “Jap”, “Japs are savage.” etc) not caring others increase it worse. What can normal Japanese citizens do to stop it? I am sure almost all Japanese people thinks it’s not right at all. Seeing hitting them so many times and the entire water is covered totally red, how cruel is that. I am a Japanese and have never even seen or had whale meats, my parents and I think personally it’s so wrong but how can we stop that? If you were a vegitarian, could you even stop killing cows? I understand people think it’s very brutal thing to do and I agree strongly. But people are very ignorant to discriminate us with very bad mouth. And if you suggest boycott us, make sure boycott Norway and Iceland products, because they catch over 500 whales every year too…
All civilised people hate whaling, my new car will NOT be Japanese.
This is a rant under Y!A rules.
It is very difficult to boycott Japanese products – we are both probably using a computer made in Japan. However, I think the Japanese behaviour is disgusting, I nearly cried when I heard it on the news this morning – watching their smug faces celebrating whilst their murdering ships prepared to set sail – thinking about all those poor whales swimming around, about to be murdered. The Far East in general have a disgraceful record for animal welfare – they are inheritently murdering b*stards.
I don’t think I currently buy anything from Japan but I will look out for products and avoid them, Save the Whale
Why is it that only Humpback Whales get stuck? Why do you never hear of any other type of whale getting stuck?
